Altitude
Tehachapi vineyards are growing grapes at an average of 4,000 feet above sea level, which is among the highest growing elevations in the state. Grapes grown at high altitude produce remarkable nuances and differ from the usual crops due to increased direct sunlight exposure. Grapes that gain longer sun exposure tend to develop darker pigmentation, which is perfect for producing wine.

Our Unique Enviroment
A combination of lower temperatures, increased solar radiation and thinner atmosphere results in thicker grape skins. The intensity of the light increases photosynthesis and creates a greater concentration of phenolics. Phenolics are a group of chemical compounds that include flavonoids, such as tannins and nonflavonoids like resveratrol. The chemical combinations give structure, weight and texture to the wine by concentrating flavors.

Looking to the Future
Wine grape growing and wine making started in the Tehachapi region in 2003, and has now grown to seven vineyards and five wine tasting rooms. In late 2020 the region received its American Vinticulture Area (AVA) accreditation. 2021 saw the start of operations of two local tour companies with tours featuring the area's wine culture. We foresee growth, both in the number of wineries and vineyards, and regional tourism. We are very excited for the future that the Tehachapi Mountains hold for our local economy and the further development of our wine culture.
